Here is a common question: How many grams in a joint?

I recommend .75 – 1 gram in a 3.5″ Elements Rice Paper Pre-Rolled Joint

This is common for Dispensaries and Delivery services to sell, pre-made, pre-rolled, and weighed out for accuracy.

Here is a question from a reader:

how much money can you make off a “ounce” like selling “joints”? or like i payed $100 for this ounce and i don’t no how many joints it can make?

Well here is your answer: If you sell a pre-rolled joint for 8$ (for example, West coast Prices). 25-28 joints per ounce (excluding shake) So you are looking at $200 per ounce ($8 x 25 joints) minus cost of papers and labor, so you are really looking at about $50-$ 70 profit.

Patients have safe, convenient access to a wide variety suppliers/growers and have a chance to learn more about the product/medicine directly from the caregivers/growers.

In Washington State, the first cannabis farmers market has been in operation for years. It is highly successful and a premier source of medical cannabis, attracting thousands of patients from all around the state. This event is held on a monthly basis in the Seattle and Tacoma areas and presents the best in medicine and medible vendors. CFM’s are FREE and open to all legal Washington State medical marijuana patients. Pretty cool right!

Our friends at Firedoglake are petitioning the FDA to reschedule marijuana from a drug with “no medical benefit” to a drug that has acceptable medical uses. This tactic would eliminate the need for medipot states to come up with creative ways for doctors to give the go ahead to their patients who could benefit from medicinal marijuana. Currently, doctors can’t actually prescribe marijuana (because the FDA says it has no benefit); instead, they can only “recommend” certain patients use the drug. As it stands now, each medipot state has its own rules governing the sale of marijuana to needy patients.

Firedoglake and its subsidiary, JustSayNow, want to get state governors and legislators to pressure the FDA to reschedule marijuana. In order to get your governor to put pressure on the Feds, you (yes, YOU, too) need to put pressure on your governor and representatives. The first basic step to take is to add your name to the following petition:

http://action.firedoglake.com/page/s/reschedule-mmj

Although we all know the obvious benefits that would occur in the realms of healthcare and economics (state tax revenues increase, drug enforcement costs decline), this is going to be a tough fight.

Because marijuana is a naturally occurring drug that patients can grow themselves, the FDA, which is heavily influenced by the giants of the pharmaceutical industry, will not be easy to convince. When they do agree to budge on this issue, it will probably be to approve a compound derived from marijuana like THC that a drug company wants to market as relieving nausea in chemotherapy patients. We can’t be satisfied with that outcome because such a drug would likely cost much more and work no better than medical marijuana does currently. Therefore, they would have to give full approval to the entire whole foods version of cannabis on humanitarian grounds.

I rest my case.

Growing high quality marijuana can be a very involved undertaking, you have to check the plants regularly, keep them watered, correct lighting sequence, regulation of nutrients, etc. …. one who has grown good marijuana knows that it takes quite a bit of love and care to get your strain to output at it’s highest level. The timing of when to flower, when to grow.

First, does the grower have access to clones or ‘starts?’ If so, that cuts a lot of time off, and time is money in this process, regardless of the method. Even the cheapest method requires some additives, even if they are natural, and additives costsomething. Anyhow, if the grower has to grow from seed, this will require germination, and a lot of attention. All of the veterans I know use additives to help speed up the process, but it still takes light power and the additives cost a little bit. Also, chances are you ordered the seed online or received them on vacation at a out-of-country shop, so that costs money as well. Clones can cost too, but chances are if you can get your hands on reliable clones, it’s from a reliable friend that will help you out for free. After all, it’s just a branch, don’t be a d face!

Another major factor is if the grower is going to put their garden indoors or outdoors. Outdoors costs considerably less due to no electricity, as well as less additives. I know outdoor growers that have done the same cheap method for years – dig big holes, back fill them with a cheap, enhanced natural soil, and give them nothing but water and animal fertilizer (such as chicken poo). The only cost is for the soil and whatever it breaks down at to get the chickens to poo…Contrast that to indoor gardens that at the very least need quality lighting, buckets and soil, but usually also need fans, ducting, building supplies to alter the room, mylar, nutrients, CO2, pest and fungus controls, and who knows how many other bells and whistles, especially with hydroponic gardens that also need pumps, hoses, etc.

Organic growing styles are by far cheaper than synthetic methods. Egg shells, animal fertilizer, and other homemade additives are cheap if not free, which cuts down on one of the most expensive ongoing costs involved. Soil is going to be much cheaper than hydroponics, even though hydroponics gets the hype. Hydroponics will yield much more, and faster, but they require countless nutrients. Synthetic additives can get quite spendy. For a multi-patient hydroponic garden using 9,000 watts a month, I can say first hand that the cost of synthetic nutrients can cost anywhere from 200-1000 a month. If you are in it just to get medicine, that is obviously a tremendous expense even if it’s broken up amongst several patients. Of course, that might seem like an extreme case to people in some areas, but a garden that size is not uncommon on the West Coast.

The other major ongoing cost for an indoor garden is the electricity. For the 9,000 watt garden I referred to above, the average electricity bill is right around 700 dollars a month. Unlike the nutrients, it doesn’t fluctuate. The garden is for four people, so I think it’s reasonable to say that if the grower gets two 1,000 watt lights for flowering and a veg light of 400-600 watts (standard for Oregon), the grower can expect something like 175 a month for their garden. Of course, power costs differ across the nation, so don’t take those numbers as guaranteed. There are also ongoing equipment costs because pumps break, bulbs need to be replaced, etc.

The strain is an important thing to consider as well. Strains that take longer to finish are going to require more resources, obviously. A big debate in Oregon is how does rent figure into the equation. People rent spaces and facilities purely for growing, so is the rent included into the cost? What if you get a slightly bigger house to keep your garden in, do you pro-rate it? Does rent not need to be included at all? The debate will possibly never be decided…

Another reason that the cost of growing medical marijuana is important is because some states permit people to reimburse the grower for their costs. Oregon is notorious for this. People sell marijuana for upwards of 50 dollars an eighth stating that it’s the cost of growing it. Cops of course argue that this is street value, so clearly violations are occurring. I would point out to neo-cons and cops the principle that were first introduced in the book ‘Wealth of Nations’ – the larger the production, the cheaper the cost.

So if cops are basing their street value off of their purchases from drug cartels, obviously the profit margins will be inflated. The cartels produced that marijuana on an ENORMOUS scale, driving down the cost of production and boosting the profit margin. With a one person garden, the medical marijuana is not produced on nearly the same scale, and therefore the cost of production rises per ounce. I’m not condoning people selling eighths for 50 bucks, but I think it’s a valid point that a lot of people don’t think about.

How much does it cost to operate your garden? Whether it’s cheap, or costs a phenomenal amount, please put your comments below to give others a better idea of how much it costs to operate various sizes and types of gardens. Help others benefit from your experience!

The fact was realized in Michigan that marijuana is an essential element in the treatment of many chronic diseases and illnesses; so it’s legal cultivation and distribution was taken into consideration. On November 4th 2008, through a referendum it was decided to allow qualified patients to legally possess, cultivate and use medical marijuana. The related law was passed on December 4th 2008 and was named as “Michigan Medical Marijuana Act”.

The said, the act has a principal defect that it doesn’t specifically deal with matters relating to marijuana dispensaries. The law confirms that specific patients can possess, grow and use medical marijuana but doesn’t layout any system about how to acquire medical marijuana, seeds or plants- where as the laws of other states do address this issue.

The limitations of this act can be pointed out as:

It doesn’t specify say how marijuana can be obtained for medical purposes.

It doesn’t specify say how marijuana can be dispensed.

This program is supervised by the Michigan department of health. The MDCH issues identification cards for the patients or their registered caregivers who are legally permitted to grow marijuana for patients. This program doesn’t allow doctors to prescribe marijuana as a medicine. The doctors can only certify that the mentioned person suffers from the illness that needs to be treated by the marijuana. The Act actually lays out a system in which specific patients or their registered caregivers use of medical marijuana are allowed a limited quantity only for personal use and in a locked facility.

The Michigan Dispensary Laws seem to be very much like California’s were several years ago until SB420 was passed. SB420 realized the formation of collectives that could dispense medication within a closed circuit model- meaning that medicine could only be acquired and dispensed to members of the collective.

The MMMA provides for a system of designated caregivers. The caregiver can acquire 2.5 ounces of usable marijuana and grow up to 12 marijuana plants for a qualifying patient. The caregiver may assist up to 5 patients. The caregiver must sign a statement agreeing to provide marijuana only to the qualifying patients who have named the individual as their caregiver.

The caregiver’s name, address, birth date and social security number must be provided to the state at the time of a patient’s registration. The Department will issue a registry identification card to the caregiver who is named by a qualifying patient on his/her application. The Department may not issue a registry identification card to a proposed caregiver who has previously been convicted of a felony drug offense. The Department will verify through a background check with the Michigan State Police that the designated caregiver has no disqualifying felony drug conviction. A caregiver may receive reasonable compensation for services provided to assist with a qualifying patient’s medical use of marijuana.
