How Many Plants and Dispensaries One Caregiver Can Supply

In Colorado:

Of patients with active red cards, about 56 percent designate a caregiver or a medical marijuana center to grow their herb. The registry doesn’t break down those figures further, but Salley provides a “snapshot” of data from March 26, when 4,944 patients had a private caregiver and 53,747 people allotted their plants to a medical marijuana center. There may be a slight overlap in those numbers, but it’s likely insignificant, as both patients under eighteen and home-bound patients can have both a caregiver and an MMC grow for them.

“There are several rules and regulations governing the growth and distribution of medical marijuana by caregivers. To read the Board of Health rules regarding the Medical Marijuana Program click here. In addition, all caregivers must register their grow sites with the Department of Revenue. For more information about this process call 303-205-8421 or visit their website.

Primary Caregivers may care for no more than five (5) patients unless exceptional circumstances exist.

Patients may petition the Registry for permission to increase the number of people their caregiver can serve. The patient and caregiver must be able to clearly explain how granting an extension to the caregiver will benefit the patient’s health, safety and welfare. The caregiver must be providing services beyond growing and/or transporting medical marijuana for the patient. If granted, the term of the waiver will be for one year, unless the caregiver’s caseload drops to five or fewer patients during that term. To request a waiver, the patient must submit a Caregiver’s Patient Limit Waiver to the Registry.  The Registry will, at minimum, consider the following when processing waiver requests:
  1. The information submitted by the patient applicant;
  2. The information submitted by the primary caregiver;
  3. The proximity of medical marijuana centers to the patient;
  4. Whether granting the waiver would either benefit or adversely affect the health, safety or welfare of the patient; and
  5. What services beyond providing medical marijuana the patient applicant needs from the proposed primary caregiver.”

7,500-10,000: The estimated number of marijuana industry jobs that currently exist in Colorado, according to Michael Elliott, the Executive Director of the Marijuana Industry Group, a trade association that advocates for responsible marijuana regulation.

As was covered earlier in the chapter on strains and symptoms, there are wide varieties of THC that are within different strains. So just as different intensities of THC can be extracted into different quantities and sold for different prices, there are variances in the price of dried product as well. The common range of prices is $10-$30 per gram, and in the black market there are commonly discounts for those who purchase quantity. For example, a product at $50 for 3.5 grams will sell at $300 for 28 grams.
