How Much Income Can I Make in the Medical Marijuana Industry?

There are many ways to make a decent income within the mmj industry. As a medical marijuana patient you have access to jobs that those without a med card could NEVER ever get.

You have the choice of thousands of medical marijuana jobs throughout the many mmj states ( more states are WAKING UP year after year ) and as you learn how to grow, clone and learn the grow techniques YOU will be able to get yourself a job within a collective or even offer clones and meds to other patients.

The different types of “green jobs” that you have access to will also continue expanding due to the new products and hydro companies that seem to come out with a new product every few months due to the DEMAND for quality growing supplies like led grow lights, organic nutrient options and anything else that benefits mmj patients specifically.

Playing by the Book:

Before you get your medical marijuana card you need to think about whether you want to grow or just go to collectives for your meds. It is ALWAYS BEST to let your doctor know that you would like to grow and to give you a plant count recommendation so that IF you end up cutting clones or growing meds you will have the card to back you up in court if need be.

If you setup a collective there are many loop holes that you MUST jump through to stay in business and NOT get raided. Now sadly, no matter what your state calls legal the federal government is a different story all together.

Within our Republic, each and every state was meant to be independent of each other and be able to run their state however the PEOPLE saw fit. We ALMOST see this with some states like nevada which allows MANY liberties like gun rights, legalized prostitution and so forth however the federal government has since tried to play the trump card on all states and dictate what they can or cannot do.

You will need to make sure to have a mmj lawyer available unless you get yourself a “start up kit”

Dispensary Income:

Income wise, 12k daily is more than possible but that always depends on the quality of the meds, the amount of patients the collective helps out on a daily basis and their donation pricing structure.

If you were to talk to a dispensary or collective owner about how much income they make however they will likely say ZERO. Within the many ups and downs and loop holes that a mmj “business” must jump through and dodge seem endless.

We need to continue supporting the collectives, co-ops, delivery services and dispensaries out there because they put their necks on the line on a daily basis.

As a non profit collective however you can have a salary as can those who work with you. 6 and 7 figure monthly cashflow is VERY possible especially in cities sized like Los Angeles for example.

The amount of NON mmj sales however in ALL states makes the medical marijuana industry look like a “personal grow”. There is a ton of money to be had however the state, the fed and the nannies of the world feel the need to dictate what we can put in our bodies.

Cash Only

There are not too many merchant accounts that will work with a marijuana collective as many have “portions” of their business located in NON mmj legal states which could put their entire business at risk of being raided, auctioned off and odds are plenty of jail time and fees to follow.

In California you can find more and more merchants that are willing to work with collectives however they can be higher fee wise which might not seem like a bad thing COULD BE due to a collective needing to ask a higher donation amount for meds due to the increase in fees they incur.

If patients pay more, they may go elsewhere to get their meds especially if the quality is similar.

Many patients cannot have “marys pot farm collective” or “420 collective” listed in their bank or credit card statements and use CASH for most medicine, growing supplies or other 420 related items they purchase.

Using cash is beneficial for the collective as well due to not having a long term “tracking” of each and every donation made, when they were made and other information that the feds could use against them AND their patients later on IF laws change.

Cash only systems are benefiting YOU the patient even if you feel it is an inconvenience.

Gross Income: Dispensary.

Using the word income and profit usually confuses people when talking about NON PROFIT organizations like collectives ( dispensaries  often considered the same however dispensaries are being removed by collective business models more and more these days).

There is a ton of profit to be made which can allow the dispensary owner the ability to expand into other parts of the city or in different locations around the state.

As more and more of these dispensaries open up, the opportunity for that cities mmj growers and smokers will go up. The growers will be able to provide the meds and the patients will then have a SAFE PLACE to get their medication.

A successful mmj collective / dispensary can easy achieve 5,6 and even 7 figure monthly income. Finding reference points from actual owners need to be taken with a grain of salt as SOME are actually counterproductive to mmj laws due to the misconceptions that surround the mmj scene as a whole.

If you setup a collective, dispensary or delivery service you will be able to make a LARGE daily, weekly, monthly and yearly income that will help generate a ton of LOCAL INCOME that is much needed in any and all states ( and countries for that matter ).

Grower income

Medical Marijuana Growers in California can easily pay for their grow, their electricity, their grow accessories and even rent and living expenses IF done correctly.

You can provide collectives and patients clones, meds, edibles, concentrates, mother plants and even growing supplies and the amount of income will depend on what YOU decide to get started doing.

For example you can make $5-$8 per clone when working with collectives and they tend to need 20,50,100+ per week which can add up to a great income generator for any small time medical marijuana grower trying to expand.

When working with other patients they tend to offer donations per clone ranging from $10 – $15 per clone. Most patients will ask for 8 – 30 clones at a time and many will stay LONG TERM patient to patient friends, buddies and fellow mmj activists which is always good to know locally.

Besides clones, many collectives need quality medication and while they will offer you wholesale donation amounts for your meds they will always need a quarter pound OR MORE every time so they will always be there when you need donations to cover expenses.

It is always more beneficial to ask for 8th – ounce donation amounts as that will net the average grower better “recouping” of their growing costs overall.

      Hey Christie,

Not sure if you found an answer yet. But a few thoughts, first i am not in the cannabis business, I do prepare tax returns and provide tax advice for those that do.

I don’t know the laws in GA, I am in Michigan, currently (as of 9/11/17, dispensaries are illegal, but they should be legal by the end of the year or so.

But, check the laws in GA, as to how much you can grow as a caregiver. In MI, a caregiver can grow 12 plants per patient with up to 6 patients. So, depending on how much you can grow in GA, I don’t know that you would have enough income to open a shop. Might be an idea to work out of your house.

If you are open to relocate, take a look at the CO and IL applications to see what all is entailed. Or you can keep checking the MI website for updates.

Tax compliance and reporting is a big issue, mainly because it is pretty much an all cash business, also, federal taxes can be 50% or more of your income as many deductions are disallowed. i do have clients that have not filed in a few years, but now they want to in order to get a license. Problem is, shoddy records at best.

I am not sure if that helps or not. Hopefully some things to ponder.

One even went back to school for horticulture so he’d have a little edge. I am going to do the online certification once my college semester is up. Please let me know, this is a new adventure in Pa. Lot’s of money to be made, already researched one Dr. in Philadelphia, he took the 4 hour course and seems ready to get going with this. Thanks in advance..

I live in Michigan and have been married to a caregiver that grew every thing on our property in a large pole barn. I understand the LARA details and unfortunately did not keep tabs on his business. We are now going through a divorce and he is claiming he has zero income. I know this is not true and I need to understand how I would calculate an estimate on the value of the grow and all equipment . I’m a hard mother of 2 small children and support the folks in Michigan that choose this business to make high profits but I need help to put a value on everything.

I appreciate any input, recommendation, information etc.
thank you in advance for your anticipated reply.

    Hi,

I live in ohio and want to know, will list my background in science. Also, how to get started?( Ohio a state that is always in flux- look at our voting history….the most complex state ). We vote democratic but have republican ideas. That’s why our state has the 2 out of the top 10 worst cities to live in. Nursing homes are huge, and well so is medicine. I am looking to get into this, but it would have to be a deal out of state i.e….Ohio is yet to be a Medical Marijuana state. How can I get this started remotely?

What I bring to the table: If you say stats, I am you guy. I currently have my degree in science, and will be interning to sit for my sleep boards, and corrective exercise specialist. Also, going into Nurse Practitioner school. I have AP 1 and 2, advanced physiology, Medical Term, Physics, Stastistical Math, Human growth and development, Occupational Therapy, etc. Were I received all A’s or B’s. Currently taking microbiology, where we are doing and trasfering different bacteria, such as E.coli( it’s short name ), and Staph( it’s short name ) and growing cultures and observing their growth. Also refreshing chemistry, and taking pathophysiology( the disease process from start to finish on every system ). To top it off, will eventually have experience in EMR( electronic Medical records ). So think a science guy in biology, with Health IT, and business as an eventual clinician. If you feel I can be an asset, and get things started, safely gentleman……As yes profit is important, so is following guidelines, and can piggy back an me getting am R.N, on top of my science degree, and a Nurse Practitioner in the future. Which in half the states, would have the legal power to work independently as a prescribing Physician would. Hit me up, as I would want to start.

Thanks. Only serious inquiries. Also as a platform to share advise.

  • Tritty September 17, 2015, 11:54 pm

So much incorrect information! These comments are filled with false statements and what I’m assuming is guesses. I do this for a living full time completely legally in California. Startup costs vary completely based on what you are trying to do and where. In California, regulations vary by county regarding plant numbers and grow areas. Are you trying to grow indoor? Outdoor? Greenhouse? What medium do you plan on using? How big are the pots you want to use and what kind? Do you want to grow organic or hydro? Probiotic? Aeroponics? So many variables. So many options. Indoor can be a very expensive start up. And electricity costs can be insane if you are really doing it. There are also a lot of variables involved in keeping your room at the right temp and humidity. If you want to do outdoor and do it for real, you wil spend most of your overhead on pots and dirt. My partners and I spent $15 thousand on soil alone this season. You need a lot of it and big pots to put it in as your plants will need a lot of room to grow into. If you are doing it right, your outdoor plants will be huge. If you are a beginner and want a fairly cheap, very versatile setup, you can build yourself a hoop house for a couple grand and fill that with 20 gallon grow bags. With this setup, you can grow year round and go from veg cycle to flower whenever you want, just like indoor. Two greenhouses is even better. You can have a decent pull every couple of months. Greenhouses are awesome because you can do whatever you want in them and still get free light from the sun for several hours a day. In California, you currently have the ability to be an independant grower and sell to other patients or dispensaries as you see fit. As for income, you can sell as much as you can grow basically. Dispensaries will give you anywhere from $800 for mediocre outdoor up to $2500 for high quality indoor and greenhouse bud depending on time of year and demand. So the question is how much can you and do you want to spend on your garden? And how much can you grow and ultimately get for your product? I have seen guys do very low budget outdoor grows and pull 60 pounds in a season (at, say $1500 a pound, you do the math) and I’ve seen guys pull 250 pounds from huge greenhouses with at least 10 grand put into them. It’s up to you and of course your ability to grow good quality, high yielding plants (top, top, top). But depending on your county and their restrictions and what you put into your plot, you could make anywhere from $3000 to a million dollars and beyond in a year. Step by step to get started?: get your medical card, find your grow space (indoor room, garage, basement, outdoor fenced in garden, greenhouse, etc.), get grow space dialed in (all conditions perfect in indoor), plan out your garden (how many plants? How big of pots? What medium? What strains? What type of nutrients on what regiment? Etc.), get pots, dirt, and clones, fill pots with dirt, put plants in pots, water and feed, watch grow, harvest, dry, trim, sell, repeat over and over and over, invest back into your garden and expand, repeat, learn, make mistakes, learn more, repeat. I hope this helped answer some questions. Just seemed like there was a lot of confusion going on here. It can be hard, it can be frustrating, but so very rewarding. Good luck everybody! Happy growing!

    • Ann August 16, 2017, 3:10 pm

      Hi Tritty,
You seem to be very knowledgeable on this subject. I wonder if you can give me some advice. I have a 10 by 10 vacant room in my home that has good ventilation. If I am on a limited budget ($2000) and want to start small by learning the process and getting my feet wet, how many plants and what kind would you start with? I was thinking to start with 10 plants? Does this make sense and would you agree?
      Thank you.

    • Channing September 17, 2015, 7:32 am

Hi I would like to share that i have been in the weed business for around 19 years. I know how to grow great looking and powerful medicine. I also live in North East Colorado. Contact me by email and i will reply as soon as i can. I am a Retired Disabled Marine that has a clean record and lots of knowledge and experiance when it comes to the business and growing sides of great weed.

      • Theresa Dolan December 28, 2015, 4:32 am

Channing, you did not leave an email add. So here’s mine. I am currently in Grand Junction, and have lived with a top notch grower for many years. I know quite a lot about outdoor grows, but when it comes down to it, there’s so much more to learn! I have wanted to stear toward concentrates. The ‘ gro-man’ here isn’t with the extraction process, that is necessary to achieve optimal results.
Any way I guess I’m just looking into other options or avenues , or perhaps just wanting to branch out and test the waters of the legal side of things. Thank you very much, Theresa.

i am also looking for investors or partners to start a Clinic, that provides a variety of alternative health care methods, here in Michigan. I have over 15 years experience in the industry and moved out to Michigan in 2010 when the laws turned in our favor. Born and raised in the california scene, i gained most of my knowledge out there, moved to Michigan to bring the knowledge here. we are 100% organic, are working with a lawyer and are striving to be certified organic. We are also wanting to change things up a bit this year and add an aquaponics system to our grow. let me know what you think. I think it would be easier to ride this wave with some investing help/network.

  • Jsy May 23, 2015, 10:48 am

If you know how to grow you can easily net close to 4 pounds for two trees. You could probably net more with pinching or cutti ng. Just research and look at proven methodology

  • Paul May 21, 2015, 9:17 pm

Fascinating commentary. I grew pot on Maui, both in the jungle and indoors, back in the early 80’s. I would love to do it again, but it looks like you need to be connected and in with a collective in order for it to work. I have friends that have plenty of great pot but they can’t sell it to any of the dispensaries. They are basically shut out. Is there a way to circumvent the club system?

  • geoff May 14, 2015, 5:40 pm

Hi We started a MMJ business from scratch in East Los Angeles area.
After reading various stories on the internet and articles etc.

    • donnie clark February 19, 2017, 3:46 pm

looking for partners? I’m looking to get into the collective business myself i live in ventura county.

  • Tina February 25, 2015, 4:51 am

Honestly none of u know what u are talking about if you can sell weed legally u would never work again there are people who sell illegally everyday and make 50,000 every two day buying a pound for 500 from a farmer in California and selling it for 1000 or hand in hand it in smaller quantities and make about 1600 so now u tripled your money if someone is lookin for a partner I’m very interested we would make atleast 50,000 every week why do u think everyone wants to legalize because they know it’s money in the weed game I know personally

    • Daniel April 7, 2015, 9:07 am

Thing is, illegal sellers don’t have to put up business application fees, they don’t have to maintain a storefront property, they don’t have to pay employees, they don’t have to pay taxes.

I have a licence to both grow and carry in R.I. I invested 4,000 ( really about 6,000 worth of equipment etc…but shopped carefully) to start a small but high tech room. I have 12 plants in veg and twelve ready to harvest. You CAN make a goodly sum if you sell to the dispensaries directly. I grow organic hydro in a very clean room. For the first two years I am being mentored by an experienced, talented and proven legal grower. It took him about 3 years to iron out all the wrinkles so I am benefitting greatly from his learning curve. We split the profits down the middle so we both get 50,000 grand or so a piece. That is not including the hash oil that we will be outsourcing ( next month this is new for us) so I’ll clear about 60,000 a yr. SO FAR we pay no taxes as we are considered farmers. At the end of the second year I will go solo and should clear about 110,000 a yr. Utilities fluctuate-about 200 in cold months but can shoot up to 500 in July/Aug.
I realize I am pointing out the obvious but you will not make money unless you are an expert grower or have one working for you. There are just to many variables that can go wrong. Although I will not get rich from this I make good, comfortable living without leaving my home.

    • Debbie March 26, 2015, 7:39 am

So to get a license to grow you first have to find a dispensary to sell to first? My state is in the process to pass a bill for medical use of marijuana and I want to grow. Just don’t know how to get started in the process.
Thanks a bunch if you can give some advice.

    • Kristen March 31, 2015, 6:55 am

  • jim bookman January 17, 2014, 4:50 pm

Who ever wrote this article knows nothing about how this business works. He is day dreaming just like all of you! Stay at your day job. The only way legally growing marijuana will make you money is if you upgrade from working at McDonalds! And most people that make that kind of money could NOT afford to get started in the legal sales of marijuana! You typically have to already be making the kind of money you normally get being a care giver in your present job or business which is about $40,000 dollors a year. Expenses to start are around $15,000 and your expenses per month to operate could aproach $500 a month or more. Annual fees are in the thousands. . Lets face it! They are controlling it and locking us out.

    • bongstar420 February 4, 2014, 1:22 pm

What state are you talking about? I’m not even allowed to register as a grower, I am poor, and I am still planning on being a legal grower. All it takes is a good grower and a credit card with $5000 on it to start (the credit is easy since I got that with an income of 10-15k annually). Fortunately in Oregon, I can be hired as labor and be compensated according to whatever agreement I can strike with a patient (according to a new law which becomes effective March 2014). I simply have no rights and must live by the grace of the patients (pretty close to the same as normal employment), but the construct that I am operating is perfectly legal. My concern is how much social networks will determine who gets the sales. A person shouldn’t have to make friends or go to social events to make sales.

I believe that your estimates are not pertinent to the most skilled growers and you shouldn’t be concerned with market entry for average participants. If you are skilled, the cost of entry will only be an issue for the most restrictive states.

      • Scott June 27, 2014, 5:41 pm

(Indoor) Growing herb is a difficult endeavor much like farming is except… You have to be Mother Nature too. Your $5000 credit card investment is a laugher. Yes that may be enough to play with as a hobbies but not as a real money generating grower. My rooms probably cost 40-60 thousand. I stopped counting because it didn’t matter at that point I was all in regardless. It takes three years to be an adequate grower for the most part. The cost of failure over that time is what usually sends people back to the 9-5 job they should of kept and return to. This is not a lifestyle for many. The pitfalls and disasters that await most is the reality. Good luck and keep your day job.

        • Jeff July 7, 2014, 5:33 pm

You can set up a small grow for about 10,000 grand. This will produce about 5 LB’s of Medicine every 2 month’s. A little over 1 gram per watt. But, you will need to be an expert grower going in and have the right strains. My advise is to keep your day job. Just look at craigs list, you will see all the failed grows selling there equipment, at least in California.

          • Jimmy August 21, 2014, 6:48 pm

You sir are very wrong on your weight versus investment.

  • jim bookman January 17, 2014, 3:46 pm

Its all so much bullshit! Dictators are still enforcing and keeping you from making any substantial amount of money. Why? Because the governments of the world and our nation do not want the average man or woman to start to make good money God forbid you get a little power and do yourself and others around you good. You might become more independent and think for yourself. So, NO you can only make a little money but no more than what they say! It’s bullshit, All medical growers should be allowed to grow as much as they want and sell as much as they want legally and practice good capitalism wich only puts more money into the pockets of the poor and provides more jobs and more tax’s. Ect… We could help our entire economy with this, but THEY won’t let it happen!! Why?? Because THEY want america to fail! Why? So they can speed along world government and world holocosts.

    • green green February 16, 2014, 6:33 pm

i agree with everything you are talking about. We are not free anymore. Weed is not a crime cause it isn’t harming anyone. The only crime is if somebody is stealing from someone or harming them. that is in the constitution.

    • tina November 2, 2014, 6:01 pm

I agree all states in usa should be legal .for general population as well.more jobs etc.and will get us out dept..billions billions of dollars.would help even in the poorest states.it would help in every area…congress and president of usa.legalize pot.and fix our income ,and be a part of a generation of jobs and growth.it is the answer to help.truely make a differemce.please

    • Johnny badass October 1, 2015, 5:48 pm

I use to travel to California and back to Oregon every week with 10 lbs I made an easy 15-20 grand a month

  • jim bookman January 17, 2014, 3:32 pm

you guys are ALL WRONG. there is very little money in LEGAL marijuana sales because its ALL government regulated. When you sign up you are watched like a hawk. You are only allowed to sell 1 oz at a time to only 5 patients within a reasonable time frame also regulated and defined by the state and feds. It usually means no more than 2 oz. per month per patient. You might clear $4,000 dollors a month. Having any extra amount of marijuana wich you will have if you grow the maximum amount of plants makes you vulnerable and illegal. Count your expenses and you’ll have less per month. You will be selling illegally if you sell more than what is dictated to you. And believe me you will go illegal! They all do. Sorry, but you all are day dreamers of a false fantasy . And for those that think the government is doing good by this, think again. They are still screwing you over and have another motive behind all this legalize crap. If it were really all good, they would’nt put so many regulations on medical growers.

    • Paul May 13, 2014, 7:10 am

Unless you are a caregiver yourself, you don’t know shit buddy. Here, in Michigan we pay no state taxes on it, so wtf are you talking about costs? The $20 a month I spend on a led grow light? I use no nutrients, since I grow Organic and reuse the soil over and over again. It actually gets better over time. I spend about 50 a month in expenses. Startup cost was a little over $1000 for equipment. I make about $3500-$4000 a month, depending on what strain and what cost. By the way, were you high when you wrote your comments?

      • Kathleen October 9, 2014, 8:37 pm

        hi Paul,
I’m interested in your method in growing medical pot..
Can u use a basement? We were just approved in our state for medical pot. Please share how u got started and all.
        Thank you Kathleen

      • Kristen March 31, 2015, 7:05 am

Paul, I want to start a grow room and get legal to sell. Can you help me? I also live in Michigan, what do I do to get legal?

      • Annette Beals April 10, 2015, 12:34 pm

I am new to indoor growth. Been out of circulation for some years. I need help and advice. Can I start/buy my clones before I get my hard copy card. 4-6-15 went to dr.

  • Tamara September 30, 2013, 4:16 pm

Are you legal if you never claim any income on your taxes? If you are a caregiver you are allowed 5 patients correct? 12 plants for each patient? If you make 12 K a month do you have to claim it?

I’m a California grower and am finding myself a little less that pleased with dispensary pricing of meds to patients. I am beginning to see a trend moving to straight delivery services, I think this is going to continue as there are currently three delivery services to every dispensary in my area.
Dispensaries will go away soon due to greed and the crime they generate.

How cost to start dispensary in seatle?

  • Cerebral November 28, 2012, 2:21 pm

You’ll want to be within your legal limits in Colorado before you start. Make sure you’re legally able to cultivate any plants before you begin. You may need a certified caregiver’s license.

Typical start up requires lights, grow media, a grow system, an exhaust system with fans and ducting, tools to set everything up, tools to manage your grow (measure pH, adjust PPM, etc), nutrients, and of course cannabis.

A small operation will most likely cost you around $2,000.
