First I would ask why you want to open a dispensary? If part of your answer is the reward of helping people then go ahead. The day to day operations with customers will be the most rewarding, then the money. If you do it solely for the money, Karma will come back and kick you. Now let’s talk about the deets.
There are currently thirteen states who have legalized the medicinal use of marijuana. Each one of these thirteen states has different laws surrounding the purchase and distribution of marijuana. First you want to do all of your own research, but here is a quick break down of most states’ processes. Second you want to follow all state laws and don’t antagonize the feds who might still want to bust you, even though it is legal under state law.
- Get legal!This is just common sense plain and simple.
- Business Acumen. This can be a long process, for example, Marijuana dealers in Arizona and New Mexico must go through the state to obtain a license. They must also acquire tax stamps showing that they have paid the state tax requirements on all sales of marijuana. Enjoy the Process :-).
- Become a Patient. If you’re going to be in this field, your going to be around it so get yourself covered by Visiting a doctor, it’s easy. If you can, call around first to find one that will write you a script that will cover you for possessing more then the generally accepted legal limit if it’s possible. For example, if you live in California, you’re allowed to possess up to 6 mature and 12 immature plants in general but if a doctor recommends more then you’re allowed to possess more but never have more then 99 plants or 5 pounds because it brings federal charges.
- Incorporate. There’s a specific order of steps you need to follow. You need to create a collective as a non-profit corporation first, before you can get your licenses and permits. It’s recommended you form a collective and not a cooperative. legalzoom.com or hire a lawyer to make sure the paper work is right so their are no questions on liability.
- Sign a lease. You need to do this one last step before you can file for any licenses and permits. Why? The sellers permit and business license requires an address for your location; it’s no good anywhere else.
- Obtain a License. Ok, your finally ready to file for licenses and permits. Don’t skip this step, medical marijuana transactions are taxable by law. Usually, An annual fee of $100 is required to become licensed to sell marijuana.
- Pay Taxes. Tax stamps are $10 per every ounce you sell, don’t cut corners on this, pay your taxes, you will still be making money. All fees are payable to the Department of Revenue
- Open up for business!Don’t skimp out on security, it’s improtant. At least one security camera is required. Follow the law and keep a low profile, no matter what you do it’s still a risk in this business, but it is good to know that you are helping people. Good luck!
- Security. Watch your parking lot. Not enough people do and it leads to trouble. People loiter, roll up and sell bud to their friends and it makes you a target

I’m responding because this post, out of all, resonates to me as having a good possibility of a group project coming to fruition. A group like this, in a business like this, has a good chance of survival and growth. My family and I live in East Tx, between Houston and Beaumont. I work for a major oilfield operator, but grew up ranching and have a green heart. Mine and my wife’s mothers are retire teachers and, with a lifetime of stress, I know exactly what prescription they need to relax and enjoy retirement. I own land that abuts a national wildlife preserve and is virtually inaccessible to outsiders, due to a 25,000 acre forest. This land is tropical in nature and very fertile. I am currently a college student at the University of Florida and i was looking into the medical marijuana laws that are set to be voted on in November of 2014! I began investigating and decided that i would want to open up a dispensary in south Florida once I graduate. Its a hard decision because marijuana is still illegal in Florida, and medical marijuana is still far from being legal here. I want to open up a dispensary not for the money or the abundance of marijuana, but the fact that i’ll be helping patients who need medical marijuana and that I would be providing them with that medical care. The dreadful thought of “what if they vote it down” has gone through my head a few times, and i was wondering if moving to a state with medical marijuana would be worth the adventure? I was also wondering how much it would be to start a dispensary? I could go on for days asking questions about starting a dispensary because its just so foreign to the south eastern part of the United States, but if anyone could help me with any questions or provide feedback that would be great. Hi patrick my name is Jennifer Tomlinson an I’ve been awaiting the day florida legalizes green. There is 2 main reasons for why I wanna open a dispenser of medical green for the state of Florida. Back In 1999 my father was arrested for the cultavation of green he had fields in Fargo Georgia he used his hunting camp as a decoy to hide what he done for a living as long as I can remember my father always talked about his farm an how great his aka tomato plants were doing as if I really new what a pot plant looked like. My father took pride in farming his pot plants witch he sold to 3 states so he had a pretty big buissness. It all came to an end as the FBI took him down, my father was looking at the rest of his life behind bars so he changes his name an fled to Mexico. For 12 or 13 years my father lived over there in such poor conditions, he made a new life an new family an left us behind I talked to him maybe 10 times in the 12 to 13 years. My father missed everything an being daddy’s lil girl it hurts. Last year In august my father got really ill so my oldest brother tried to get him home with out the government knowing who he was needless to say he ended up turning himself in. My fathers health went down hill very instantly an in jan of this year my father past away. I got to see him before the past an his health deteareated. I missed his funeral on purpose cause I wanted to remember him how he was the last time I saw him for the first time in 13 years. My father missed out on everything he’s never meet my 8 year old daughter. I’m very very disgusted with our government for taking my father from me so I wanna give back to him by turning my 5 acers of land he gave me in white springs florida into a grow farm despencery for medical marajanna an call it t-bone nation from story’s I hear bout his pot it was truely the best around I wish I could get back all the time that was taken from us but unfortunately all I can do is move forward so my father is the main reason I want to start this company an I want to donate proceeds to family’s that had there loved ones taken from them cause grew medicine to help others. My father was not in it for the money he lived as if he was poor he knew that this mighty plant sent from our lord was medicine. My father mike Tomlinson never even took a Tylenol for pain he was this dedicated to the pot an was sure it helped in so many ways for so many illnesses way before any government started broadcasting what pot was good for. My father deserves an award an before my time is here to go to heaven to be with him I will if in my power make sure my story is herd every where.
